What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic hair restoration technique that involves the application of specialized pigments to the scalp to create the appearance of natural hair follicles. It is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that is fantastic for treating baldness, thinning hair, and scarring on the scalp.

SMP is custom tailored to each person's individual needs and preferences. It could be as low as $400 for scar camouflage or a touch up to as much as $3,500 for a completely bald head. We want to help you and will work with you on a solution to cover the costs.

Scalp micropigmentation is generally not considered painful. The procedure doesn't require any anesthesia nor numbing and there's zero blood but if you happen to have a sensitive scalp then Tylenol or Advil are great. Many of our clients have never had a typical tattoo before which hurt much more intensely and they rate the discomfort of SMP a 3 or 4 out of 10.

A lot of clients literally sleep through their session, and we have streaming services so you can relax and catch up on your favorite movies and shows.

The length of your session depends on the extent of your treatment, but it typically takes 2-4 sessions, each lasting 2-6 hours. Each session gets shorter than the previous session. A scar camouflage can be 30 minutes to an hour.

Scalp micropigmentation is considered a semi-permanent treatment, and the results will last a lifetime and lighten over 5-10 years before a touch-up is needed. However, the longevity of the results can depend on factors such as your skin type and lifestyle. Minimizing direct sun exposure for example will extend the time before touch ups. SMP pigment is made specifically for SMP and will not turn greenish or blueish like typical tattoo ink. It will only lighten slowly over time.

This varies on the amount of work needed to revitalize your SMP but can be as little as $95 for scar camouflage to $500 for an entire head.

Yes!  Scalp micropigmentation is fantastic for women who are experiencing hair loss or have a naturally thinning hairline. The treatment will create the appearance of a fuller head of hair or add density to your existing hair.

That depends on your goals. Hair transplants are a surgery that carries all the risks of a surgery under anesthesia and requires continuation of hair medications to fight against whatever caused you to lose your hair in the first place. Those medications have side effects and, as you likely experienced, your hair still thinned and fell out which will continue even after a hair transplant. Plus, it is expensive, limited in the amount of hair follicles that can be transplanted, may require multiple surgeries, and will leave large scars where the hair was transplanted from. Hair transplants can deposit up to about 5000 hairs. With SMP, we typically replicate 20,000+ hair follicles.

Many clients who get transplants still get SMP to build density because they may not have been able to transplant enough hair or their transplanted hair is thinning out. Also, to cover up the scarring and bald spots that the hair transplant surgery left behind.

In addition, there is down time required for you to heal from the surgical incisions and punctures but with SMP, there is no blood and no downtime. You can have your session today and be at work, out on a date, or attending a special event tomorrow.

Finasteride is a medication that is commonly used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). While it can be an effective treatment for these conditions, it can also have some potential side effects. Some common side effects of finasteride may include:

  1. Sexual side effects: One of the most well-known side effects of finasteride is sexual dysfunction, which can include a decrease in sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and a decrease in the volume of semen produced.
  2. Male breast enlargement and tenderness: Finasteride can sometimes cause breast enlargement in men and tenderness, a condition called gynecomastia. This is due to the way the drug affects the balance of hormones in the body.
  3. Skin rash or itching: Some people may develop a skin rash or experience itching as a result of taking finasteride.
  4. Depression and anxiety: In rare cases, finasteride may cause mood changes, including depression and anxiety.
  5. Allergic reactions: Some people may be allergic to finasteride and experience symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

It's important to note that not everyone will experience all of these side effects from finasteride. However, it's important to discuss any potential side effects with a healthcare provider before starting the medication, and to seek medical attention if any serious or persistent side effects are experienced.

Minoxidil is a medication that is used to treat hair loss. While it is generally considered safe and effective, there are some potential side effects that may occur in some people. Some common side effects of minoxidil include:

  1. Scalp irritation: Some people may experience itching, redness, or flaking of the scalp after using minoxidil. This is often a mild and temporary side effect that goes away on its own.
  2. Unwanted hair growth: Minoxidil can sometimes cause hair growth in areas other than the scalp, such as the face, hands, or arms.
  3. Dizziness or lightheadedness: In rare cases, minoxidil can cause dizziness or lightheadedness, especially if it is absorbed into the bloodstream.
  4. Chest pain or rapid heartbeat: Some people may experience chest pain or a rapid heartbeat after using minoxidil. This is more common in people with a history of heart disease or other medical conditions.
  5. Allergic reactions: Some people may be allergic to minoxidil and experience symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

It's important to note that not everyone will experience all of these side effects from minoxidil. However, it's important to discuss any potential side effects with a healthcare provider before starting the medication, and to seek medical attention if any serious or persistent side effects are experienced.

Wearing a hair piece can give the look of long hair but the adhesives and weaves can contribute to the loss of your natural hair. Not to mention they can be hot, itchy, irritating to the skin, and look artificial. There is also the anxiety that comes with having to guard anything from touching or moving the hair piece. Things such as, swimming, children close to your head, sweating, physical activities, etc. are ill advised and risky. SMP is carefree in comparison just needing a quick buzz of your natural hair every few days to keep you looking sharp and feeling fully confident.

No! Although SMP is ideal on a buzzed head, it is also a great solution for thinning hair. The extent of your hair loss, your style, and preferences will determine the best SMP application for you. Contact me for a free consultation and we'll tailor a solution just for you.

Yes! People with white or grey hair still have fantastic results. SMP simulates hair follicles which still naturally look dark even when someone's hair has turned white because the root remains darker. We use a lighter shade of pigment now and adjust the shade as needed at your touch up sessions. We simply match the pigment color to your natural hair follicles to achieve a youthful, natural, and age appropriate result.

No! We simply match the pigment and density to each individual person to create the look they want.

Although SMP is a type of tattoo, we use equipment and techniques that are specialized for SMP. Body art tattoo's require depositing tattoo ink deep into the skin with heavy saturation and pressure to make sure the artwork is vibrant and lasts forever. For SMP, we stay just a couple of layers deep into the skin and deposit just enough pigment with extremely fine needles to leave a natural looking follicle impression or dot. These dots slowly soften over time allowing you the flexibility to adjust your hairline to be age appropriate or to keep it looking fresh with an easy touch up.

There are lots of options for hair loss these days. After researching what's out there and seeing firsthand what SMP can do, I was so impressed that I wanted to be the guy that people can count on to deliver amazing results and life changing confidence. I sought out the best training, studied hard, practiced for long hours, proved myself to the master artists, and got to work. Plus, the State of Nevada requires a six month apprenticeship to further document that my skill is solid and I didn't just buy a tattoo gun from the internet and call myself an expert. I am also not some huge franchise company just trying to pack as many people as possible into a day. I never see more than one or two people in a day so I can take the time needed to go over all of your options, answer all of your questions, and do the best job possible. It's important to me that you always feel welcome and comfortable. Your success is my success and I genuinely mean that. Plus, my consultations are free, I have the support of one of the best teams in the country, and my pricing is more than competitive. This isn't a hobby or a side gig. This is my craft and my livelihood. You're in the right place.

Apex means the pinnacle or the top. Since I'm growing to be at the top among the best in the business, plus I work on the apex of your body (the top of your head) the name Apex fits my goals, your goals, and the auspicious trajectory of what we do.
